Parrot Breeders

Bred, captive parrot’s lives are selected, prepared, and nurtured by their breeders. They are in essence; the parrot’s surrogate parents.  An adult parrot’s personality can be a direct result of the way it is raised and how it is handled when it is young.  When selecting your parrot’s breeder, make sure you choose one who has a very good reputation.  You can buy a parrot from a rescue group or from a pet store, but when you get one from a breeder you are able to learn the parrot’s history and you can witness the way it was raised.

Breeders Methods and Duties

Raising a healthy parrot depends a lot upon the breeder’s methods. Those methods will affect not only the parrot’s personality, but also its health.  Feeding methods plays a huge part of the methodical responsibilities of a parrot breeder.  Parrots and parrot types have different responses to feedings.  Good breeders know and understand nutritious and safe food and the huge role they play in developing happy and healthy parrots.  Another duty of your breeder is correct weaning of the parrot babies before you can take yours home.  Young parrots are usually fed fresh produce, warm soft food, pellets and or seeds.

Early Training and Socialization

An important part of a bird’s life is its ability to fly.  You may prefer to have your parrot’s wings clipped if you don’t like the idea of your bird flying loose around your house.  However it is very important that baby parrots learn to fly before their wings are clipped.  It is in your best interest (and that of the parrot) to find a breeder who allows their babies to learn how to fly.  They need to learn how to land and maneuver in flight.  Socialization and emotional health depend upon the care young parrots receive early in development. This too is a duty of the breeder.  You may ask potential breeders how they socialize the baby birds they are selling.
Bathing is an important event in a Parrot’s development and life-long health. Therefore, it is important that a breeder to introduce bathing to their birds at an early age.  The best time to introduce bathing is when the baby is partially feathered.  You need to ask your breeders these types of questions and to view their aviaries.

Know your Breeder

Parrot breeders for the most part are responsible and caring individuals who love the breeds and love being a part of a parrot’s life at such a crucial time.  But some breeders are just into breeding parrots to make money.  You need to be aware of the difference. Some shipping methods are illegal, and some shipping companies are criminal. Again, you should know the differences as they apply to your situation.
Getting a parrot is a lifetime commitment on your part. Therefore, contracts for this very important business transaction is a must.  Good breeders will also be available to you after your purchase in order to answer your questions and to give you support.  Parrots can live to as much as 60 and 100 years old.  They are a huge commitment, and are worth the effort you put into finding the right breeder.
Some parrot breeders are more knowledgeable then pet store owners and continue to breed parrots for the love of the breed.  If you choose to buy a parrot through a breeder you will have a better chance of purchasing a well adjusted, happy, and more importantly healthy bird that will last a lifetime.
